Double lip oil seals, also known as radial shaft seals or lip seals with an additional dust lip, are sealing components designed to perform a dual function in rotating machinery: sealing in lubricant and providing enhanced exclusion of external contaminants.
Key Features and Benefits
Dual Sealing Capability: The primary lip retains the internal lubricant (oil or grease), while the secondary "dust" lip provides enhanced protection against the ingress of dust, dirt, water spray, and debris from the external environment.
Enhanced Contamination Control: They offer a superior level of protection in harsh, dirty, or dusty environments compared to single-lip seals.
Cost-Effective Solution: They provide enhanced sealing performance for a relatively small cost increase over single-lip designs, making them an economical choice for many industrial applications.
Compact Design: They require minimal additional axial space compared to single-lip seals, allowing for compact machinery designs.
Ease of Installation: Designed for straightforward press-fit installation into a housing bore.
Construction
A double lip oil seal typically consists of three main components, similar to a single lip seal, but with an added feature:
Metal Case/Outer Shell: Provides structural rigidity and ensures a secure static seal in the housing bore.
Elastomer Sealing Lips: Features a primary inner lip for lubricant retention and a secondary outer (dust) lip for contamination exclusion.
Garter Spring: Positioned behind the primary sealing lip to maintain a consistent radial force on the shaft, ensuring effective sealing despite minor shaft runout, wear, and material degradation.
Common Materials
The material of the sealing lips is selected based on the operating environment's temperature, chemical exposure, and shaft speed:
Nitrile (NBR / Buna-N): The most common and cost-effective material, offering good resistance to petroleum-based oils, greases, and fuels within a temperature range of -30°C to +120°C.
Viton® (FKM): Used for applications requiring resistance to high temperatures (up to +200°C) and aggressive chemicals, acids, and fuels.
Silicone (VMQ): Offers superior flexibility and performance in extreme low and high temperatures (e.g., -60°C to +200°C).
EPDM: Primarily used for resistance to water, steam, and ozone in non-oil-based applications.
Applications
Double lip oil seals are suitable for applications where environmental conditions are harsh or dusty, and superior contamination exclusion is required:
Agricultural and Construction Equipment: Used in gearboxes, axles, and hubs of tractors, excavators, and other machinery operating in dirty, dusty environments.
Automotive Industry: In engines, transmissions, and axles where both oil retention and protection from road contaminants are necessary.
General Industrial Machinery: In pumps, motors, and fans located in dusty or washdown areas.
Material Handling Equipment: Used in components of conveyor systems and forklifts to protect bearings from dust and debris ingress.
