Buffer hydraulic seals are specialized components in hydraulic cylinders that primarily protect the main rod seal from shock pressure loading and sudden pressure spikes. Positioned in front of the primary rod seal, they help absorb pressure fluctuations, improve system performance, and extend the lifespan of other sealing components in heavy-duty applications.
Function and Design
Buffer seals are an integral part of the rod sealing system, acting as a robust first line of defense.
Pressure Spike Attenuation: Their main function is to absorb transient, high-frequency pressure peaks that can be much higher than the system's nominal operating pressure. This protects the more sensitive primary rod seal from potential damage and premature failure.
Contamination Control: They act as an internal excluder, preventing internal system contaminants, such as metal particles or debris, from damaging the primary rod seal.
Lubrication Management: Buffer seals are designed to allow a controlled amount of oil to pass through to lubricate the primary rod seal and the wiper seal. Crucially, they also include "pump-back" or pressure-relief features to prevent oil from getting trapped between the buffer and rod seal, which could cause pressure build-up and seal malfunction.
System Stability: By evening out the pressure within the cylinder, they ensure smoother operation and improve the longevity of the entire sealing system.
Materials
Buffer seals are made from robust, high-performance materials selected to withstand high pressures, temperatures, and aggressive media.
Polyurethane (PU): A common material prized for its excellent mechanical strength, high wear resistance, and resistance to extrusion under high pressure.
PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene): Often used in energized configurations (combined with an O-ring or X-ring energizer), PTFE offers very low friction, high chemical resistance, and wide temperature tolerance. Variants are often filled with materials like bronze or carbon to enhance strength and wear characteristics.
Nitrile Rubber (NBR): Used for general-purpose, cost-effective applications compatible with petroleum-based fluids, though typically not for extreme pressures or temperatures.
Fluoroelastomer (FKM/Viton): Provides excellent resistance to high temperatures and a broad range of aggressive chemicals and synthetic fluids.
